CATHY B. ABELSON
President, Abelson Legal Search
Cathy founded Abelson Legal Search in 1990 to meet the professional staffing needs of law firms and corporations and to assist job seekers in securing new positions. With more than thirty years' experience in the legal community, she is uniquely qualified to identify and match attorneys at every level of experience. Currently Cathy devotes her time to managing Abelson Legal Search and placing attorneys in corporate legal departments, working with partners, individually and in groups and facilitating firm mergers. An original member of the National Association of Legal Search Consultants (NALSC), she has been an advocate for strict ethical standards for recruitment professionals, and her sense of fair play and professionalism have been acknowledged in many ways by her colleagues.
A native of New Haven, CT, Cathy began working the Philadelphia legal community as Director of Administration and Student Affairs at The Institute for Paralegal Training in 1973. At The Institute Cathy recruited and hired practicing attorneys as instructors and was responsible for the administration of academic, faculty and student affairs. She developed particular expertise in the specific hiring requirements of many legal specialty practice areas.
In 1983 Cathy was recruited to become the Senior Attorney Search Consultant at Legal Placements, Inc., where, for seven years, she placed associates and partners, with an emphasis on associate placement. During that company's existence, she facilitated the growth of many law firms and corporate law departments and the successful moves of numerous experienced attorneys.
Cathy has worked extensively with every major law firm in the Delaware Valley and with attorneys at every level. She has facilitated the addition of key partner(s) practice group(s) and the acquisition of other firms that helped to reshape several law firms. That she continues to work with many of the same individuals, firms and corporations as when she entered the legal recruitment profession is effective testimony to the respect she has earned from attorneys, hiring professionals and corporate human resource experts. Although her specialty has been with placements in Greater Philadelphia, Wilmington, DE, and southern and central NJ, Cathy has matched attorneys throughout the United States.
Cathy is well known for her support of numerous charitable activities and groups in the legal and wider Philadelphia communities. She has been particularly supportive of the Philadelphia Bar Association and Foundation, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, The Support Center for Child Advocates, The Children's Crisis Treatment Center, Ronald McDonald House, The Donor Gift of Life and Women's Way. Clients and candidates continue to note her accessibility and generosity. She and her husband live in Newtown, PA.
